He holds the highest religious, legislative, and military authority in the Islamic Republic of Iran, having succeeded his father Ali Khamenei, who was killed on 28 February in a US-Israeli strike. He was previously a little-known figure, and since his formal appointment as leader on 8 March he has neither appeared in public nor had any video or audio released. This has fuelled widespread speculation about his health and the extent of any injuries he may have sustained.

His appointment has not been officially announced, but since 19 March several Iranian media outlets have referred to him as Commander-in-Chief of the IRGC. He served as Minister of the Interior in Ebrahim Raisi's government from 2021 to 2024, and has an extensive background in senior IRGC positions, including in its extraterritorial arm, the Quds Force. He is regarded as a key figure in Iran's security establishment with longstanding influence over military strategy and regional operations.

He held senior positions in the IRGC and served as Iran's Chief of Police (2000–2005) and Mayor of Tehran (2005–2017). He has been Speaker of the conservative-majority Majlis since 2020. He has run unsuccessfully in several presidential elections, including the snap election of 2024, where he finished third. He is known for his close ties to the current IRGC leadership.

A reformist politician who served as Minister of Health in Mohammad Khatami's government from 2001 to 2005. He has been a member of parliament since 2008 and was First Deputy Speaker from 2016 to 2020. He won the snap presidential election of 2024 following the death of Ebrahim Raisi, defeating conservative and hardline rivals. After Ali Khamenei's killing, he joined the interim leadership council and remained there until Mojtaba Khamenei was chosen as successor. He is said to currently have limited influence over major state decisions.

He previously served as Deputy Commander of the IRGC Aerospace Force before taking command. He was appointed following the killing of Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh in Israeli strikes in June 2025. The IRGC Aerospace Force sits at the heart of Iran's missile and drone programmes and plays a pivotal role in the country's military and defence structure.

He previously commanded the IRGC Navy and held other senior IRGC positions during the 1990s and 2000s. He later headed the IRGC's Centre for Strategic Studies from 2007 to 2023, and served as Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council from 2023 to 2025. He was subsequently appointed as the Supreme Leader's representative on the Defence Council, established in the aftermath of the 12-day war.

A veteran of the IRGC, he has held senior positions in the Armed Forces General Staff, the police, and the Ministry of the Interior, serving as Deputy Interior Minister from 2009 to 2014. A military pilot who fought in the Iran-Iraq War, he commands the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, which oversees coordination between the IRGC and the regular army. This supreme military command body has grown in importance during the ongoing war with the United States and Israel.
